Michigan enacts forced sterilization law

1913. The state of Michigan enacts a forced sterilization law, applied to “mentally defective” or “insane” persons residing in public institutions. It stated that the the state of Michigan had the right to sterilize such persons if they were deemed to have the potential to generate “mentally defective” offspring, subject to the judgement of a board of surgeons and physicians.

Michigan enacts forced sterilization law

1913. The state of Michigan enacts a forced sterilization law, applied to “mentally defective” or “insane” persons residing in public institutions. It stated that the the state of Michigan had the right to sterilize such persons if they were deemed to have the potential to generate “mentally defective” offspring, subject to the judgement of a board of surgeons and physicians.
